Introduction
Withania somnifera or Ashwagandha has been extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine for their therapeutic benefits. It is popularly cultivated in India, parts of Africa and the Middle East regions. This medicinal herb acts as an adaptogen (help body adapt to stress naturally) strengthening the immune system against biological and physical stress. It can also boost general health and alleviate anxiety and stress symptoms. Ashwagandha can protect against fatigue, skin conditions, pain, diabetes, epilepsy and arthritis. (1,2)

ASHWAGANDHA AND CANCER
Extensive studies have been carried out on ashwagandha powder to understand its anti-cancer properties. Studies on ashwagandha powder have revealed that bioactive molecules present in the ashwagandha powder can effectively prevent carcinogenesis (transformation of normal cells into cancer cells). In experimentation models, ashwagandha powder has also demonstrated other anti-tumour properties. Accoring to studies, Ashwagandha powder also has proved beneficial to treat stress symptoms associated with cancer treatment. (1,3)

RESEARCH

  1. A study demonstrated the tumour-inhibitory properties of ashwagandha powder in in-vitro tumour formation assays of nude mice. It was observed through molecular analysis of p53 function, that growth arrest and apoptosis take place in those selective tumour cells. (4)
  2. A collaborative study published in the Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cancer Research, IIT Delhi revealed that ashwagandha have the ability to provide wild-type p53 tumour suppressor activity in cancers which have certain types of mutations present. (5)
  3. A study published in 2011 observed that ashwagandha powder provided significant protection against urethane-induced lung adenoma in mice. It showed controlled protection against uterine fibroids and dermatosarcoma. (6)

EAT AS PER YOUR WEIGHT
The dosage of ashwagandha powder can range from 125mg to 5g daily, however, it should not be consumed all at once but distributed two-four times throughout the day.
