Introduction
Gudmar or Gymnema sylvestre is a herb distributed in many parts of India, Malaysia, tropical Africa, Australia, and Vietnam. It is considered one of the essential herbs in Ayurveda and Gudmar leaves have found to help, treat, and alleviate the symptoms of diabetes, malaria and even snakebites. (1)

GUDMAR LEAVES POWDER AND CANCER
Extensive studies are being conducted on gudmar leaves to understand its anti-cancer properties.  As per research it has been observed that gudmar leaves provided effective cytotoxic activity against breast and lung cancer cell lines.

It has also been found that Gudmar leaves are a powerhouse of antioxidants and combat oxidative stress in the body. Tannins and saponins present in gudmar leaves alleviate inflammation and exert an anti-cancer effect by preventing the growth and proliferation of carcinogenic cells. (1, 2)

RESEARCH

  1. Data collected from a study revealed that administration of gudmar leaves powder reduced the number and incidence of tumour in the specimen model. (3)
  2. In another study, administration of dose-dependent of gudmar leaves displayed a strong anti-inflammatory effect and cytotoxic effect against the human osteosarcoma cell line. (4)

EAT AS PER YOUR WEIGHT
The recommended usage of gudmar leaves powder is ½ – ¼ teaspoons per day. Initially, the dosage should be around 2grams and then it can be increased up to 4grams if no side effects occur. Consume the powder with water after lunch and dinner. (5)

STORAGE
Gudmar leaves powder should be stored in cool and dark places. Store the powder in an air-tight sealed container and should not be subjected to extreme temperatures as it will denature the components. The shelf life of gudmar leaves powder can last for a year and is essential to keep the powder away from the reach of children. (5)

SIDE EFFECTS

The ill-effects of un-recommended consumption of gudmar leaves include;

  1. Weakness
  2. Lowering of blood sugar levels that normal level i.e., hypoglycaemia. Individuals who take blood sugar medications should seek medical advice prior to consumption of gudmar leaves powder.
  3. Excessive sweating and shakiness
  4. Muscular dystrophy
  5. Pregnant and breastfeeding women or older adults and young children should consult with their medical practitioner before using gudmar leaves powder.
  6. Gudmar leaves powder interacts with medication like antidiabetic drugs, tolbutamide and phenacetin. (1)
