Infact, this medicine, deeply connected to the ancient Indian region of Tamil Nadu, has been providing healing options for numerous diseases for centuries. Historic theories suggest its origin around 2000 BC. Specifically, the word Siddha means “an object to be attained”, “Perfection” or “heavenly bliss”. It is based on the belief that health is a balance between the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. When these elements are in balance, a person is healthy. When they are out of balance, a person can become sick. This powerful system integrates the physical, mental, and spiritual realms to promote health and well-being. Today, Siddha medicine is gaining global recognition for its effectiveness in treating a wide array of chronic ailments and enhancing overall vitality.

Philopsophy of Siddha Medicine

Siddha system believes that the human body is composed of 96 Tatwas, 72,000 blood vessels and 1300 nerves. Besides these, there are 10 Nadi (main arteries), 10 Vayu (vital Pranas) and 10 Vegangals (natural functions). All of them play important roles in different functions of the body. The Siddha medicine also recognizes the role of three humors, called Mukkuttram (Vatham, Pitham and Kapham).

How Siddha Medicine Can Help Manage Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

When it comes to treating AWS, Siddha medicine uses a variety of treatments to restore balance to the body, including herbal remedies, dietary therapy, yoga, and meditation. Some of the most commonly used herbs include:

  • Injiver (ginger): Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help to reduce nausea and vomiting.
  • Vacha (acorus calamus): Vacha is a calming herb that can help to reduce anxiety and insomnia.
  • Punarnava (boerhavia diffusa): Punarnava is a diuretic herb that can help to reduce fluid retention and bloating.
  • Manjistha (rubia cordifolia): Manjistha is a blood purifier that can help to remove toxins from the body.

Siddha medicine also uses dietary therapy to help manage AWS. People who are withdrawing from alcohol are often advised to eat a bland, easily digestible diet. This can help to reduce nausea and vomiting. In addition to herbal remedies and dietary therapy, Siddha doctors may also include yoga and meditation to help manage AWS. Yoga and meditation can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality.

(1) The patient had been drinking alcohol heavily for 10 years and had been experiencing symptoms of AWS for several days, including anxiety, insomnia, tremors, and sweating. He started the intake of alcohol at the age of 18 and consumed alcohol for 17 years. Initially he was drinking occasionally, but later he used to drink alcohol very frequently. He was consuming 600ml of alcohol (Liquor type) per day and 91 drinks per week. He often took more than usual amount (binge drinking). So, he felt in a risk group (Men younger than the age of 65 at risk of more than 14 drinks per week). Infact, patient presented with symptoms such as tremulousness of hands, increased anxiety and agitation and decreased sleep with headache. Infact, on examination the patient was found to be anxious, the appetite was much reduced. He was of medium body built, heart rate was 78 per minute, pulse rate was 76 per minute and blood pressure was 130/80 mmHg.
