If you continue to have high blood sugar over several years, you could go on to have a more severe eye disease known as proliferative diabetic retinopathy. There is an increase in blood vessels on the retinal surface, which is why it’s called “proliferative”. Blood can leak out of these vessels, which are fragile. There is a long-term loss of vision from scarring of the retina.
